Arjun Makhijani

Arjun Makhijani is President of IEER, the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, in Takoma Park, Maryland, dedicated to increasing public involvement in and control over environmental problems through the democratization of science. Makhijani has written extensively on the health and environmental affects of nuclear weapons production, the legacy of nuclear weapons and their impact on ordinary citizens.

He holds a Ph.D. in engineering (specialization: nuclear fusion) from the University of California at Berkeley. Makhijani has produced many studies and articles on nuclear fuel cycle related issues, including weapons production, testing, and nuclear waste, over the past fifteen years.

He is the principal author of the first study ever done (completed in 1971) on energy conservation potential in the U.S. economy. He is the principal editor of Nuclear Wastelands and the principal author of Mending the Ozone Hole, both published by MIT Press.

He has worked in India's villages, organized for nuclear disarmament in the U.S., and written widely on energy, environmental, and economic issues. He has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, where he specialized in controlled nuclear fusion.
